To continue on my theme of resonance  -

I came across a notebook written by my father. I have no idea if these were his own thoughts or those he had read somewhere but one way or the other he considered them worth recording.

Education  -‘To draw out, to develop the faculties of soul and body, to utilize them to their fullest capacity’.

Understanding – ‘Often we fail to distinguish a finer shade of meaning, not because we are too dull to understand, but because we will not even attempt to understand. The finer shades of argument are inevitably the most difficult to distinguish.  We must not be certain of our ability to discriminate between the subtlest gradations of colour merely because we know the difference between black and white’.

Political, socially aware, sensuous, romantic, historic, idealistic aspirations may be found in a work of art which engages the whole person, physically, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. What is implied in the statement ‘to develop the faculties of soul of body’  is surely encompassed here. The choices made by the artist in the completion of a work certainly include ‘the finer shade of meaning’
