Resonance

I enjoy reading about art, philosophy and the nature of creation.

I often take notes about what has resonance with our own way of thinking. What I also find intriguing is different points of view that I had not already considered and that are well expressed. There is a satisfactory moment when I come across an observation that has been dormant in my mind but which I had not taken the time to analyse and shape into a clear and concise format. Comments such as a work of art as a ‘prolonged interaction of something issuing from the self with objective conditions, the carrying forward to completion of an inspiration by means of the objective material of perception and imagery’ which comes from the philosophy of John Dewey. I found 'Art as Experience' by John Dewey to be fairly intense.

Another point I noted in relation to the work of art is that it not the result of a spontaneous emission but much more related to time, even though the actual act of creation may seem completely spontaneous when we are engaged in it. There is an incubation period to come up with an idea and time to work through it, making a painting, printmaking or, whatever form of creativity to which one relates best, a continuous challenge.
